The League of Women Voters of Rogue Valley (LWVRV) will host Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia at their October 10 2019 meeting and invites the public to attend. LWVRV is a local, non-profit, non-partisan organization that engages, among other activities, in education on social issues. LWVRV is a member of the state and national LWV.
Judge Mejia graduated from North Bend High School and obtained his baccalaureate and Law degrees from the University of Oregon. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 and served as a Public Defender for 13 years. In April 2002, Governor Kitzhaber appointed Mejia to the Circuit Court bench for Jackson County. After a hard-fought campaign in November of 2002, he was elected to a full six-year term and continues to serve in that position.
Most of his legal and judicial career has been in Criminal Law, but he also served as a Juvenile Court judge for four years. He is also a Community Family Court (CFC) judge. CFC is a treatment court for parents with an open juvenile dependency case. Judge Mejia is active in the community, supporting groups like La Clínica de Valle and Southern Oregon Goodwill.
Judge Mejia will focus at the October 10 meeting on criminal justice issues in Jackson County and Oregon, as well as on some juvenile issues. The program starts promptly at noon. A question and answer period will follow Judge Mejia’s remarks.
